You Don't Have to Keep Proving You've Changed

Hi Friend,

There's a strange thing that can happen after you've done a lot of growing.

You keep checking.

Am I still bothered by that?

Would I react differently now?

Have I really moved on?

Am I finally the person I said I wanted to become?

It's almost as though we think growth needs to be periodically tested to make sure it's still there.

So we revisit old stories. Replay old conversations. Think about people we no longer know. Analyze things we've already analyzed seventeen different ways.

Sometimes that reflection is useful.

And sometimes I think we're just standing at the door of a room we already left, looking inside to make sure we really left it.

At some point, you're allowed to stop studying who you were.

You don't need to perfectly understand every choice you made.

You don't need to feel nothing when you remember something painful.

You don't need to demonstrate that you would handle it differently now.

The evidence is your life.

It's what you tolerate now.

What you choose now.

What you notice sooner.

What you no longer chase.

What you no longer explain.

What feels normal to you now that once felt impossible.

Growth doesn't always announce itself with a profound realization.

Sometimes you just look around one day and realize you haven't visited that old room in a while.

And maybe you don't need to go back in just to prove you've left.

A Gentle Prompt

Is there anything from your past you keep mentally revisiting even though there's nothing left for you to solve?

What would happen if you let it be finished?

Before I Go...

You don't have to keep proving that you've changed.

Eventually, you just get to live as the person you became.

See you next Sunday.
